Geese read Border Collies as predators, not pests. The breed’s signature low crouch and fixed, unblinking stare mimic exactly how a wild predator stalks, a far more convincing threat than a dog simply chasing them off. The geese remember, and they stay away.
That instinct comes from centuries of breeding for herding, not retrieving, which is exactly the skill set geese control requires. Border Collies also happen to be the most trainable, intelligent dog breed around, and ours are raised to be gentle, sociable, and comfortable working around people and pets.
