Why Border Collies?
Geese read Border Collies as predators, not pests. The breed’s signature low crouch and fixed, unblinking stare mimic exactly how a wild predator stalks, a far more convincing threat than a dog simply chasing them off. The geese remember, and they stay away.
That instinct comes from centuries of breeding for herding, not retrieving, which is exactly the skill set geese control requires. Border Collies also happen to be the most trainable, intelligent dog breed around, and ours are raised to be gentle, sociable, and comfortable working around people and pets.
What We Know About Canada Geese Control
Geese don’t leave a property because of one scary encounter. They leave because a location stops feeling safe over a sustained period, which is why occasional patrols rarely work on an established flock. Geese have strong site fidelity, meaning a group that’s nested or fed somewhere for a season will keep returning to that exact spot unless the pressure against it stays consistent.
Timing also plays a role beyond daily visits. Geese are easiest to move before nesting season begins in early spring, since once eggs are laid, state and federal protections limit what can legally be done near an active nest. Early, consistent pressure before that window tends to prevent a much bigger problem later in the season.
Golf courses and retention ponds are common trouble spots for a specific reason: geese are drawn to short mowed grass near open water, which describes most fairways almost exactly. That’s part of why commercial properties often need a more structured, ongoing schedule rather than a single seasonal visit.
